Circumcision

When we learned our first child was going to be a boy, the first thing I started doing research on was circumcision. We had already established that the AP method of parenting seemed a perfect fit for us. My first impulse on circumcision was a motherly gutteral scream of "NOOOooooooo..don't cut my baby". The research I did proved to me that my first instinct was correct, there is no medical reason to slice off the top of a tiny infant boy's penis. Over 80% of the world's men are not circumcised or better known as "intact". In the US, the number of intact men is about 50%.
The American Academy of Pediatrics released a statement in 1999 after a 2 year study that concluded that the "potential medical benefits" of newborn male circumcision are not sufficient to recommend routine circumcision.
Many child development experts recommend leaving our infant boys intact; Dr. Benjamin Spock, Penelope Leach, Dr. Sears, to name a few.
